What is a Catappa leaf?

Catappa comes from the tropical almond tree Terminalia catappa. Once placed in the aquarium, the leaf gradually absorbs water, sinks, and naturally releases tannins and plant substances.

These tannins can give the water a slight amber tint, which is particularly sought after in certain natural aquariums and biotopes.

How to use a Catappa leaf?

Quickly rinse the leaf with clean water before introducing it into the aquarium. You can then place it directly on the water surface.

The leaf generally floats at first and then ends up sinking naturally after becoming soaked with water.

It can be used whole or cut into several pieces depending on the size of your aquarium.

How many Catappa leaves should you put in an aquarium?

The quantity depends on the tank volume, leaf size, and the desired effect. It is best to start with a moderate amount, then adjust gradually.

In small aquariums and nano shrimp tanks, a 15 cm leaf can easily be cut into several pieces.

Do Catappa leaves lower the pH?

The tannins released by the leaves can have a slight influence on the water, but the effect on the pH strongly depends on the hardness and buffering capacity of the aquarium.

In highly mineralized or buffered water, the effect on the pH may be very limited. Therefore, Catappa should not be used as the primary method for adjusting water parameters.
